Brakes was the first foodservice supplier to employ a dedicated nutritionist over 20 years ago, which has grown to a team of highly experienced nutritionists and dieticians.  

This team work closely with the FSA, DCSF and School Food Trust on all key health and nutritional issues, to remain at the forefront of new product development and Government guidelines.

Product innovation remains key to Brakes. Last year saw the launch of our new non pre-fried breadcrumb product, Smartcrumb. Designed to meet the Government's food-based and nutrient standards for school meals, the Smartcrumb coating is made using simple ingredients to produce that ‘just fried' breadcrumb, but allowing the food to be baked rather than fried. In addition, our Healthier Choices products meet strict fat, salt and sugar criteria. We also have a large range of inherently healthy products suitable for school meal menus.

Providing the tools that allow you to make informed choices, and putting together a variety of great tasting menus is just as important as the products themselves. We have launched a dedicated information and recipe CD-Rom specifically designed for education sector caterers. Available free of charge, it includes a wealth of information on just how Brakes can help you meet the new standards.

Championing British food, and working with customers and consumers alike to promote and use the best available home grown and reared ingredients, we have supported British food and farmers for many years. Partnering with LACA and ASSIST, we run an annual competition to celebrate British and Scottish Food Fortnight in the classroom, encouraging children to think about where their food has come from.
