Get Remembering

Get remembering took place last year and was one of the most popular days to get involved with as schools and caterers recognised the importance of 11th November, Remembrance Day. At 11am millions of people will observe two minutes silence to remember those who have fought in wars past and present.

The aims are to create awareness of the day, what it stands for, educate young people about what school food was like during the war and the type of food that soldiers eat in war today and how it helps them recover. There is an interview with Falkland's war hero Simon Weston that can be used in an assembly or class.

School meals for all began in the 1940's during the Second World War and were introduced because young people were malnourished. The same might apply today as so many young people are still eating the wrong things.

A day to think of others

  • Hold a two minutes silence at 11am

Ideas for Schools

  • Invite people to come in and talk about their experiences in a conflict. You may have local camps or Territorial Army bases that would help.
  • Show the NSMW video with war hero, Simon Weston at lunchtime. This will be available on www.iloveschoolmeals.co.uk and www.facebook.com/nationalschoolmealsweek.
  • Serve a typical school meal from the 1940s and explain to the pupils what it must have been like in the 1940s. There are recipes you can download on the website.
  • Let children dress up in clothes of the time and award certificates for the best ones.
  • Decorate the dining room as if it was a street party to celebrate the end of the war.
  • Encourage children to understand the significance of the Poppy and either draw or make a poppy that they can wear or take home to show their family. www.britishlegion.org.uk
  • You could raise money for the British Legion but this is entirely optional.
