Get 5 a Day

Do you ever struggle to get your pupils to eat all their fruit and vegetables? Today we want young people to understand the importance of eating their 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables. Eating a balanced diet brings many health benefits and today is a chance to promote these with the help of Change4life and Mary's Meals.  New for this year are the four Change4life Healthy Eating Quizzes for Key Stages 1 to 4. Why not have a go yourself?

NSMW is working with Mary's Meals, a charity that provides daily meals to chronically hungry children at their local school in places like Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. By showing the work of this charity to young people we want them to understand how lucky they are to have fruit, salad and vegetables on their plate every day. Children in poorer countries are going to school just to receive free porridge as it's the only meal they will get that day. Many children will have to walk miles to school and then walk back again but the benefits to their life are huge as food encourages school attendance. The charity gives many children a brighter future.

Ideas for Schools

  • Use the NSMW assembly material in your school that is designed to show pupils how lucky they are to have fruit and vegetables on their plate at lunchtime.
  • You could donate 3p from each meal served today or ask every parent/child to bring in 3p to cover the cost of one meal for a pupil at a Mary's Meals project.
  • Look at the fundraising guide for other ideas on how to raise money for Mary's Meals. Then set yourself a fundraising target with the school council and see if you can beat it. You could put up a poster that shows the target and how much has been raised so far but make sure you update it regularly.
  • Download the activity sheet from the website and give one to each child to complete.
  • Run a fruit and vegetable workshop where pupils can learn about different fruit and vegetables and get them to try them.
  • Work with your teaching staff to use the teaching resources provided by Mary's Meals.
