Local Plans

When people tell us of their plans for NSMW 2011 it will show below.  Please keep coming back to see what is happening local to you.

Mrs Lisa Raynor - Nottingham City Council

“National School Meals Week was absolutely brilliant in Nottingham City.  It was our best year ever and it increased meal numbers yet again.  The really encouraging thing is that meal numbers have been maintained.  NSMW is so easy to implement because everything is online and downloadable.  LACA must be congratulated on organising such an event because it provides a real membership benefit.”

Mr Ben Wood - S. Anselm's Preparatory School

Girls trying Escargot SupriseNational School Meals Week 2011 at S. Anselm’s

Last week saw S. Anselm’s boys and girls from the Nursery, Pre Prep and Prep School put a pause on their four week rotating menu and aimed to broaden their knowledge about foods from around the world.

Five countries were pulled out of a hat, which would provide focus for each day of the week; Italian, French, Scottish, Chinese and Caribbean. S. Anselm’s were celebrating National Schools Meals Week once again.

The aim of National School Meals Week is to promote healthy eating and engage with pupils about food. This year the theme has included foods from different countries and cultures. S. Anselm’s aims to create an interest in healthy food as well as encouraging a whole school approach to healthy lifestyles. Throughout the week healthy eating messages were portrayed.

Monday, Italian Day, hosted a selection of breads with olives, sundried tomatoes and humus, some of the facial expressions were marvellous but quickly tamed when it came to lunch where the pupils enjoyed a delicious Spaghetti Bolognaise and cheesy garlic pizza bread with a generous helping of profiteroles. After each food tasting the boys and girls were asked to vote either yes or no, which allowed the catering team to decide which successful dishes or deserts could be included in future menu’s at S. Anselm’s.

Tuesday, French Day, saw a variety of soups accompanied by French bread with Beef Bourguignonne for Lunch. Afternoon break brought an ‘Escargot Surprise’ to the pupils and staff when an invitation to try snails arrived in front of them. 113 brave pupils and 7 courageous staff volunteered to try the snails, there were certainly a few interesting faces from both the participants and also the spectators. All of the pupils who tried snails achieved the very important ‘I am a star in National School Meals Week’.

Wednesday, Great British Sausage Day, sausages with haggis, Lincolnshire sausages and Traditional Pork 6 Nations sausages were tried and tested. There was Cumberland sausage and mash for lunch and traditional scones, jam and cream for dessert.

The much awaited Chinese food day finally came. Spring rolls with a series of dips enlightened the taste buds headed by the school prefects. Chicken Chow Mein was the lunch time dish served under the wonderfully presented Chinese Dragons floating from the ceiling followed by lychees with lemon sorbet accompanied with a fruit smoothie. Pupils taste new food

On Friday, the final theme for National School Meals Week was Caribbean Day with Jerk Chicken with fresh pineapple, rice and peas. For dessert it was pineapple upside down cake and at afternoon break the children were invited into the dining room that looked more like a Barbados Beach with Caribbean music playing, bright decorations and dishes of watermelon, papaya fruit, starfruit and pineapple with yoghurt dip and Caribbean fruit puree. A number of pupils commented that this has been “The best afternoon tea ever!!” \

The week’s food themes were a hit with the children and staff alike, the atmosphere that surrounded the school was electric with children guessing the next day’s surprises. Mrs Northcott, the Headmaster’s wife had, at one stage, the whole school dancing to the music wearing flower garlands from the fruit cocktails. The food was absolutely delicious, great credit to the S. Anselm’s catering staff and to the children who dared to taste some foods completely that, prior to now, were completely alien to them.

Cardiff children have played a key role in promoting Get Remembering Day, following the visit of Falklands War hero Simon Weston to Hawthorn Primary School earlier this year to film a video message, which now features on the National School Meals Week website, as part of the National School Meals Week campaign. Former Welsh Guardsman Simon enjoyed a tasty lunch after speaking to the children at the Llandaff North school about Remembrance, the wartime diet and the importance of eating healthily.

We are encouraging our Secondary schools to take an active part in this years' National School Meals Week and we feel the themes, particularly Tuesday to Friday fit in well in North Yorkshire especially Friday as we are home to many armed forces personnel. We have had much discussion about serving porridge on the Thursday - will our students buy porridge? but we will probably have a big pot of porridge at Morning Break for students to have a free sample so that they can appreciate what the children in poorer countries receive as their only meal of the day.

Ms  Carol Stebbing - HC3S

In Hampshire our main day is likely to be Friday 11 November, especially as this will 11/11/11 this year.

Primary schools in particular teach children about Remembrance Day and have obviously expanded this to not only cover the First and Second World Wars, but more recent conflicts. In Hampshire we have several military bases and children from many of them attend local schools and know all about parents leaving to go to places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

Whilst lessons are bringing remembrance into the present day, our menu for 11 November will reflect food available in the 1940's during World War II. Not only linking remembrance, but showing children the difference between today's school lunches and those of yesteryear.

On a lighter note, Hampshire will be offering primary schools the option to ‘Get Travelling' on Monday 7 November. This is a change from the standard week pattern, but will feature ‘Pisa Turkey Pizza', using turkey supplied by Bernard Matthews as one of our suppliers and a supporter of NSMW.

Ms Caroline Gurning - Ullswater Community College

For NSMW this year we will be:-

  • Community members being invited in for lunch,
  • trying different methods of serving food to see how students react,
  • sampling school dinners from around the world,
  • asking students to suggest menu ideas or submit recipes before half term and the winner will have their meal prepared and served to their peers,
  • running a smoothie bar in morning breaks to sample different types of fruit and vegetables,
  • launching a poster competition for "Get your 5-a-day the Ullswater Way"

On Remembrance Day we will;

  • be serving cup cakes decorated with poppies and making a donation to Royal British Legion,
  • Displaying a days worth of rations at the servery counter,
  • Having sampling of some war time recipes,
  • Creating a display of pictures from local farms, who supply our produce, that were taken during the second world war to show how our area contributed to the war effort.
  • Have invited the local Army camp caterers to cook for us, we may even set up a field kitchen in the school quandrant!

Mr  Jim Davis - City Community Learning Trust, Sheffield

I have got involved in NSMW really because I have just started as an Area Catering Manager for the CCLT (City Community Learning Trust) which is basically a group of 5 schools in inner city Sheffield, and I feel it is a fantastic way of introducing pupils to my vision of the way forward by exciting pupils about school meals, where the food comes from- and from who, when it's at its best season and how easy it is to make stuff at home. Healthy eating doesn't have to be boring!

I hope the benefits are that the pupils will look forward to lunchtime and enjoy the experience, also to increase the uptake of school meals within each school. To take ideas or menus home and to get their parents both involved and interested in what their child is learning about food and eating and strengthening the ties within the local community as they are invited into school to celebrate NSMW.

Anyone who provides meals for their school, especially primary schools, should be jumping at the chance to become a part of something special. This is a great opportunity of involving and educating pupils in a fun way. All the hard work is done for you from providing menus, invitations, posters, ideas. All you have to do is decide who to invite to the party.

My plans for this year are to take the whole dining experience to the next level, getting pupils involved in some of the decision making by setting up food panels. Giving them ownership on what is on the menu to how to enhance the dining room experience through new crockery to redecorating. I would also like to introduce the Food 4 Life menu award scheme. Arranging local suppliers to come into school and give a short video or talk, about their part in providing the food that the pupils are eating on that particular day, and may be having a visit to their farm to see it in practice. My aim is also to set up a sort of drop-in cafe style area for parents to come into a safe environment to enjoy drinks and a light snack and maybe learn a little cookery on the way, but I feel that might be more in the future.
