Change4Life for Adults

1. What is one of the best ways to be healthy? One of the best ways to be healthy is to make some exercise and food swaps, and build them into your life for the long term.

Portion Swap

2. What is the problem with portion sizes today? The problem these days is larger portion sizes are more readily available. We often end up eating too much and not burning it off, without even realising we're doing it.

3. Suggest three swaps you can make to reduce your portion size.  Any combination of the following: use smaller plates, fill up on fruit and vegetables, eat a little slower, share packaged foods, focus on your food, aim to feel satisfied, not stuffed

4. What counts as high fat, high sugar and high salt on nutritional labels?

  • High fat is more than 20g per 100g
  • High sugar is more than 15g per 100g
  • High salt is more than 1.5g per 100g

Snack Swap

5. How does eating fatty or sugary snacks lead to weight gain? Our bodies are geared up for storing fat, so eating fatty or sugary snacks is a very quick way of adding to our fat stores, which can lead to weight gain.

6. List three tips to help curb snacking.  Any combination of the following:

• If we buy snacks, we'll eat them - one of the best ways to cut back on snacking is not buying them in the first place.

• If we can see food, it's human nature to want to eat it. Keep snacks hidden away so you're not tempted.

• We're less likely to eat snacks if they're harder to get to. Keep the unhealthy snacks at the back or top of the cupboard.

• Don't eat straight out of a big packet of snacks (it could make us eat up to ¼ more without even realising it). Instead, put your snacks in a small bowl.

• If you have a healthy breakfast in the morning you're less likely to want to snack before lunch. Eating distractedly e.g. in front of the TV, means we eat more without noticing or even enjoying it. Swap the TV for the table.

5 A DAY

7. What counts as a portion of fruit and give two examples.  80g of fruit, such as:

  • a slice or half a large fruit e.g. a slice of melon or half a grapefruit
  • 1 medium size fruit e.g. an apple
  • 2 small size fruits e.g. 2 plums or Satsumas

8. What counts as a portion of vegetables and give two examples of 80g of vegetables, such as:

  • 3 heaped tablespoons of peas, beans or pulses
  • 2 broccoli spears
  • a dessert bowl of salad

Up and About

9. Why do adults need to get up and about every day? To give them more energy and strengthen their joints.

10. What are the three ways people can get more activity into their lives and give an example for each one.

  • Reduce time spent sitting down - even standing or walking is better for you, take the stairs not the lift, get off the bus a stop early, if you're watching TV or on the computer, every now and again get up, stretch your legs and find something active to do for 10 minutes.
  • Get active when travelling - find ways to fit activity into the things you already do, like walking the dog or cycling to work.
  • Take up an active hobby - walking in the park, dancing, cycling, swimming or bowling
