On Remembrance Day millions of people will observe two minutes silence at 11am to remember those who have fought in wars, past and present. Did you know school meals for all began in the 1940's during the Second World War? We want to educate young people about what it was like in this war as it links in to the National Curriculum. You can turn the clock back 70 years and create a special themed menu. Why don't you invite local residents who were alive during this time to share their memories?

These downloads will help you run today

As part of Get Remembering you could:

  • Do some research on school meals in the 1940's and create a themed menu.
  • Invite people who were alive during the Second World War or your local armed forces to join pupils for a school meal.
  • You could run a competition where pupils have to design a menu based on ration food.
  • Dress up in 1940's costumes and decorate the dining hall with flags and bunting and have a VE Day type party.
  • Contact your local British Legion and see if they would like to get involved. Perhaps someone could come and do a talk about the importance of the day and have a school lunch.
  • Promote and observe the two minutes silence at 11am.
