Get 5 a Day

Get 5-a-day is supported by Change4life and Mary's Meals. Today we want young people to understand the importance of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Eating a balanced diet brings many health benefits and today is a chance to promote these with Change4life.  New for this year are the four Healthy Eating Quizzes for Key Stages 1 to 4. Why not have a go yourself?

National School Meals Week is working with Mary's Meals, a charity that provides daily meals to chronically hungry children at their local school in places like Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. By showing the work of this charity to young people we want them to understand how lucky they are to have fruit and vegetables on their plate every day. Children in poorer countries are going to school just to receive free fortified porridge as it's the only meal they will get that day.

Tell us on Twitter what you are doing to promote fruit and vegetables today

  • Use #NSMW2011

Ideas for Authorities

  • Tell all your schools about the NSMW assembly material which is designed to show pupils how lucky they are to have fruit and vegetables on their plate at lunchtime.
  • You could donate 3p from each meal served today or ask every parent/child to bring in 3p to cover the cost of a meal for one of Mary's Meals projects.
  • Download the activity sheet from the website so your school cooks can give one to each child that has a school meal to complete.
  • Run a fruit and vegetable workshop where pupils can learn about different fruit and vegetables and get them to try them.
  • Promote the teaching resources supplied by Mary's Meals to schools you work with.  These are available to download and are a great way to educate young people about how lucky they are to have fruit and vegetables on their plate at lunchtime.
